Today is the eighteenth day of Advent and the first day of Las Posadas.

December 16

Today is the first day of Las Posadas.

Las Posadas is a Mexican Christmas tradition that commemorates and celebrates the difficult journey made by Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Starting today and ending on Christmas Eve, the nine days of Las Posadas commemorates the nine months of Mary's pregnancy.

In Spanish Posadas means "inn or hotel," and present-day Posadas celebrations include a procession of people each night asking ask for shelter at different homes. Each night a house is chosen as the group's shelter where holiday foods and drinks are shared. The final night, Christmas Eve, usually ends with Mass and celebrations before Christmas morning.

In March of 2021 the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul Province, partnered with Project Home/Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul, to provide housing in their Provincial House for families experiencing homelessness. Read the article and watch the video below to learn more about this partnership and consider making a holiday donation to this great organization.
