A Stake in the Ground: A Vital Fund-Raising Initiative
The Sisters of St. Joseph have a history of identifying neighbors in need and making a commitment to serve them. One focus of their ministries today is adult immigrants. One of their adult immigrant programs is a highly successful literacy program called Learning In Style.
Learning In Style began In 1994 in an unused convent. Soon it outgrew that space and moved to a nearby Baptist church, which, again, proved too small.
So, in the depths of the Great Recession, the Sisters made the kind of decision that makes little sense unless you are guided by faith. After careful study and research, the Sisters purchased land and a building at 2200 Nicollet Avenue in South Minneapolis. It was a clear signal of their intent to stay in the Whittier neighborhood and continue to meet the emerging needs of its immigrant-rich population. This new building would house the Learning In Style school as well as additional ministries and programs.
The Sisters of St. Joseph committed money from their own investments, designating the $1.6 million as a lead contribution to a fund-raising initiative to renovate the building, construct additional space, and provide operating and mission support.
We invite you to discover more about this new ministry center and why it is vital to South Minneapolis. To tour the Sisters’ new Ministry Center or to donate to this initiative, email Sister Irene O’Neill or contact her at 651-690-7025.
